Bio

Everything that Simon Alexander Ong does is built around inspiring people to see their world differently and igniting their imagination of what is truly possible so that they can live meaningful, purposeful and extraordinary lives.

From a young age, Simon has always been curious about learning and exploring the areas of personal fulfilment, human potential and organisational success. This curiosity was accelerated following his departure from the financial industry, in which he began his career in following graduation from the London School of Economics. Studying the mindset and habits of successful leaders and organisations, Simon enjoys distilling his insights into lessons that can be easily understood and codifying the key principles that have had the biggest impact.

He shares his insights, lessons and wisdom with all who are committed to upgrading their life and business to that next level. About the speakers

Henry Hughes, CFA
Vice President, Insurance Portfolio Manager, GSAM Insurance Asset Management

Henry is a Portfolio Manager in the Insurance Fixed Income team where he covers insurance companies across multiple regions, strategies and currencies. Henry joined Goldman Sachs Asset Management in 2010 before which he spent three years in the Insurance Asset Management team at Schroders covering mainly fixed income and equity products. Prior to this, Henry spent five years in the British Army. He graduated from the University of Exeter with a BA (Hons) in History and is a CFA Charterholder.


Sie Liang

Long Tail Lines Senior Underwriter SCOR

Sie Liang is Senior Underwriter of UK Market, looking after long tail lines business as well as other initiatives including cyber, insuretech and capital solutions.

Sie Liang has over 18 years of diverse experience which includes business planning, financial reporting, capital management, product development and pricing, actuarial valuations and process reviews and merger and acquisition/management buy out due diligence.

His projects have spanned many countries including UK and within the Asia Pacific region including Hong Kong, India, South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.

Prior to joining SCOR UK through internal transfer, Sie Liang held various positions as the Appointed Actuary at a Lloyd’s Syndicate in London i.e. Sagicor at Lloyd’s as well as a Chief Actuary position for SCOR, the Global Reinsurer for its Singapore operations. His responsibilities included all actuarial statutory reporting covering the Non Life business, capital management, reinsurance optimization as well as Solvency II related applications for the Syndicate.

Speakers and panelists

Simon Yeung

Simon is a FIA with 20 years’ experience. Simon has extensive practical insurance experience including pricing, reserving, capital modelling and underwriting matters, having worked at a senior level in both industry and consultancy roles. Over the years he has consistently applied his analytic skills in developing original solutions to complex challenges.

He is currently a Director of the actuarial team at Mazars, primarily focusing on Non-Life insurance. Simon is one of the two International Representatives of the Education Committee of the IFoA.

Judith Tang (Panel)

Judith is a qualified actuary, specialising in Life insurance with 4 years’ experience in consulting and 4 years in the industry. Judith graduated from LSE with a BSc degree in Actuarial Science in 2010. Following graduation, she started her career at Deloitte, working mainly on Solvency II implementation projects for life insurance companies before moving to Liverpool Victoria in 2013 where she worked in the economic capital and methodology team.

She is currently a Senior Manager of the actuarial team at Mazars, primarily focusing on Life insurance actuarial audits and reviews. Judith qualified as an actuary in 2013.

Wenyu Bai (Panel)

Bai is a qualified actuary and senior Vice President at Redington Ltd. Bai is one of the team leads in ALM & Investment Strategy team, with a focus on pension endgame solutions and longevity modelling. She is also responsible for the business management side of the team, leading on profitability and efficiency improvement. Bai joined Redington as a graduate in 2007. Prior to Redington, Bai studied BSc actuarial science and MSc actuarial management at Cass business school. Bai is the mother of 2 young children and enjoys varies sport activities in her spare time.

About the speakers

Vasilka L Bangeova | Director | Grant Thornton UK LLP

Vasilka heads the Insurance Technical Team for Grant Thornton assurance practice and sits on the ICAEW Insurance Technical Committee. She is a member of the IFRS 17 Transitional Resource Group.

Vasilka is currently advising UK listed insurers on their IFRS 17 implementation and the development of IFRS 9 Methodology Framework and Impact Assessment.

She has managed the IFRS and other GAAP conversions of global (re)insurers and listed groups, preparing transitional balance sheets. She has also led the optimisation of the underlying system solutions, control frameworks, Board education and staff training.

Vasilka has also held senior roles with Aviva, Prudential and Swiss Re, heading economic capital aggregation, Solvency II model validation and risk and actuarial assurance teams.  

Maria Karamanou | Senior | Mazars LLP Maria joined Mazars from the IASB 4 months ago after having worked for 2 years on the development of the new standard insurance standard, IFRS 17 Insurance Contracts. More specifically, while at IASB, she was working on the IFRS 17 illustrative examples and educative webinars.

For the last four months, she has been working as Financial Reporting Senior at the Mazars Financial Reporting Advisory department and she has been advising clients on insurance and non-insurance technical accounting issues

About the speakers

 

John Towner
John is Head of Origination for Legal & General’s Pension Risk Transfer business where he helps defined benefit pension schemes transfer risk and better secure their members’ benefits. Prior to Legal & General, John was an investment consultant at Redington and advised DB trustee boards on their investment, risk management and funding policies. He began his career in asset management at Bankers Trust in New York and then moved to investment banking at Deutsche Bank and Barclays Capital in London where he built up sixteen years of market experience.

 

Marco Lo Giudice
Marco Lo Giudice is currently the Local Head of Pricing at Tokio Millennium Re, UK branch, where he leads a team of seven people across catastrophe modelling and actuarial pricing. He started in Willis in 2006 and was instrumental in building awareness of the catastrophe models among clients. He then moved in the Lloyd’s market, where he contributed to the success of two managing agencies by implementing the models and developing validation processes. Marco holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Milan obtained while studying at the University of Bath.
