CANUK Talk Event: EU Referendum (IFoA)

Register at: http://eu-referendum-ifoa.eventbrite.co.uk

The UK government has announced a referendum on whether Britain should remain in the European Union to be held on Thursday 23 June. This is probably the most important decision the British public has faced in decades! The public debate is already heating up, with many media outlets commenting, and stakeholders taking views publicly.

What impact will this have on the British society, more specifically its insurance industry and the actuarial profession? How should we as actuaries and students cope with these potential impacts and what can we contribute? Are you thinking? Great! CANUK would like to invite you to come and join the discussion with IFoA’s EU Referendum Working Party, this would be a great opportunity to share your thoughts and find out more.

Derek has successfully steered the organisation through a period of rapid and substantial change, including a full review of its strategy and reshaping the organisational structure to deliver the strategy.

Derek has broad leadership experience across the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. His roles have ranged from Chief Operating Officer at the Pension Protection Fund and CFO of Barclays Bank UK Customers and Products to leading the business support function in a major UK record label. He has also held senior positions in the food, logistics, outsourcing and technology sectors.

Derek is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He studied at Imperial College London, graduating with Honours in Chemistry in 1987, and undertook PhD research in Mechanical Engineering from 1987-1989.

Tim Werkhoven MPA

Tim joined the IFoA in November 2015, to help the EU referendum Working Party and lead the Institute’s activities around the EU referendum.

Tim graduated from Erasmus University Rotterdam (the Netherlands) with a Masters in Public Administration. Thereafter he specialised in EU Public Affairs Management, representing a wide variety of sectors and companies (such as Tesco PLC, Royal Mail Group PLC, and British American Tobacco PLC) to the EU institutions and stakeholders. He also lived in China, where he defended the interests of UK and other European companies towards the Chinese Government.

Currently, he is –on the side- studying to obtain a Masters in Business Administration. He lives in London and loves to explore the UK, and also restore – hopefully beautifully! – antique furniture.

Business Ethics: Lessons from Corporate Scandals

Do you shop at Tesco? Did you hear about them falsely overstating their profit by hundreds of millions of pound just to look strong? Or you may hold a bank account with Barclays, but you may not know the quote “if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying” coming from a Barclay’s trader…

…they say you should never waste a good crisis. Real life examples of corporate scandals and spectacular company failures leave us with valuable lessons and for some, painful cost. It can never go too far to show how business ethics and governance are closely knitted with financial performance!

On Thursday 25 February, we’d like to welcome you to our first technical/networking event of the year – Lessons from Corporate Scandals, the talk will use case studies such as Afren, Olympus, Tesco and Barclays to highlight the importance of ethics, governance and responsibility in today’s business environment.

This event is co-organised by CANUK and TANC at Cass Business School (Bunhill Row London, Greater London EC1Y 8TZ).

Topic: Business Ethics: Lessons from Corporate Scandals.
